Local guide: Stranraer Solar Panels and Home Battery Installation
Stranraer houses and roofs
Stranraer has rows of painted and harled terraces near the harbour, Victorian stone villas on the higher streets, and council and private estates on the edges of town. Out on the Rhins there are traditional farmhouses and cottages with long, low roofs. Slate and concrete tile both work well, and many south-facing slopes have little shading from surrounding buildings.
Conservation and listed buildings
Dumfries and Galloway Council looks after conservation areas in the older part of Stranraer, around the Castle of St John and the town centre streets. Panels visible from a road in these areas, or on any listed building, may need permission. Outside those zones most rooftop arrays are permitted development. We check the council maps and plan a discreet layout where needed.
Weather on the Rhins of Galloway
The south-west of Scotland enjoys a relatively mild maritime climate, with plenty of bright spring and summer days but frequent Atlantic showers too. Wind off Loch Ryan and the Irish Sea means fixings must be rated for exposure, and salt spray calls for suitable materials. Panels generate in overcast conditions, and a battery spreads that energy into the evening.
