Local guide: Thurso Solar Panel and Battery Installation
Thurso houses and roofs
Thurso mixes stone-built cottages and terraces near the river and harbour with council-built semis and newer homes on the edges of town, many of the latter built when Dounreay brought families north. Older roofs are often slate, sometimes with Caithness flagstone features nearby, while later housing tends to carry concrete tiles. Low, broad roofs are common, which gives useful space for an array without needing to go high.
Planning with The Highland Council
Most Thurso homes can take roof panels under permitted development, provided they sit close to the roof slope. The Highland Council manages conservation areas across Caithness, and older streets in the town centre may need a closer look, particularly where panels would face a public road. Listed buildings always require consent. We check your address before design work begins so you know where you stand.
North coast weather
Thurso sits far north, so winter daylight is short while midsummer evenings stay light very late. Strong, salty winds come straight off the Pentland Firth and Atlantic, which is why we choose corrosion-resistant fixings and keep arrays tight to the roof. Frequent rain helps keep the glass clean. Snow rarely lingers long near the coast, and panels shed it quickly once it starts to melt.
Booking a Thurso survey
We start with a survey of your roof, fuse board and the direction your house faces, along with how you use electricity across the day. You then receive a written, no-obligation quote setting out the panels, any battery and the work involved. We install through MCS-certified partners. Interest-free credit up to £30,000, subject to status. To arrange a visit, call 0141 230 0198.
